Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Lisbon all compete now for tier-1 corporate event business, and the destinations winning the bids are the ones that have organised their infrastructure, hotel inventory and subvention behind a clear corporate proposition.
The Best MICE Destination Europe award, part of the Travelling for Business Awards 2026, recognises the European city or region commanding that conversation in 2026. The category is open to European convention bureaus, DMOs and the host venues that lead bids alongside them.
Judging is grounded in the same bid-sheet criteria applied to the UK MICE category: venue capacity, hotel inventory, access, public realm, subvention, scaled to continental economics.
Multilingual delivery, EU and Schengen logistics, and the destination’s ICCA international rankings feature in the assessment alongside submitted evidence. Sustainability credentials, in line with UNWTO international tourism guidance, are increasingly part of the final-stage selection by corporate planners.
The category sits alongside Best MICE Destination UK and Best MICE Destination Rest of the World. European hotel brands supporting MICE delivery typically also enter Best Upscale Hotel Brand and Best Luxury Hotel Brand. European MICE destinations face the same judging spine as the UK but scaled to continental bid economics. Venue capacity and the depth of the hotel inventory are weighed against the typical conference size the city actually wins. Access from key feeder markets, direct flights, rail integration, ground transfer, sits high in the assessment, because European events are won and lost on connections. Multilingual delivery, EU and Schengen logistics, and ease of cross-border movement for delegates and freight matter. The convention bureau's subvention, bid support and incentive product close the score, and increasingly, the destination's sustainability credentials weigh into final choice.
