Independent and contract lounges delivering a credible business travel experience
The growth of Priority Pass, DragonPass, credit-card lounge networks and operator-led products such as Plaza Premium has put more business travellers through independent lounges than ever, and the gap between the best and the rest has widened.
The Best Third-Party Lounge award, part of the Travelling for Business Awards 2026, recognises the independent or contract lounge operator delivering a credible business travel experience at scale. The category is deliberately separate from Best Airline Lounge because the questions are different. Third-party lounges manage demand from multiple access programmes, often without the same passenger-tier filtering airlines apply; the winners are those who handle that complexity without becoming the airport’s overflow room.
Eligible entries include single flagship lounges and operator networks. Judging weighs capacity against peak demand, transparency of access policy, food and beverage credibility against the price point or access tier, productivity and shower provision, and the consistency of the experience across the operator’s network. Public benchmarks such as Skytrax independent lounge ratings, Airport Council International (ACI) traffic data and the published access programmes inform the panel’s view alongside submitted evidence.
The 2026 panel includes travel buyers who specify third-party lounge access in policy. The category typically attracts entries from operators whose growth is reshaping the airport experience for the broader business travel community covered in Travelling for Business magazine.
Sponsorship of the Best Third-Party Lounge category is open, full details on the sponsorship page.
Independent and contract lounges are judged on the same lines as airline product but with capacity discipline at the front. The third-party lounge wins when it manages demand from multiple access programmes without becoming the airport's overflow room. Integration with Priority Pass, DragonPass and similar schemes is judged for transparency, does the access policy actually work at the door? Food and beverage are assessed against the price point and the entry method, not against flagship airline lounges. Productivity space, showers and overall condition complete the set, with consistency across the operator's network treated as a serious differentiator for the corporate traveller.
