Motel One is a Finalist for Best Budget Hotel Brand at the
2026 Travelling for Business Awards, and its founding insight reshaped European hotelkeeping: travellers would happily accept smaller rooms if the design, the bed and the bar were exceptional. The Munich-born group built its "budget design" category on that trade — Freitag-bag cool at Formica prices — and its turquoise-accented One Lounges, part lobby, part living room, part cocktail bar, became the template half the industry now imitates.
The product discipline is rigorous. Rooms are compact but immaculate: rain showers, custom beds, considered lighting and none of the clutter that pads lesser rates. The money saved on square footage goes where guests feel it — prime addresses, arresting local-themed interiors that make every house subtly different, and staff presentation closer to lifestyle hotels than to the budget mainstream. British travellers know the formula from outposts in London and the regional cities, where the brand's combination of location and looks routinely embarrasses pricier neighbours. The bar programme deserves its own mention: serious cocktails at sensible prices have made One Lounges legitimate evening venues in their own cities, which keeps the houses lively and the model profitable.
Growth has entered a bolder phase. The group's
acquisition of seven Flemings hotels signalled a strategic appetite for expansion through takeovers, converting established properties to the One formula in markets where new-build sites are scarce — a statement of intent from a company that spent its first decades growing one carefully chosen corner at a time. The Cloud One sister brand extends the family upmarket and abroad, but the core proposition remains beautifully stable: design-led sleep at defensible prices across Europe's business capitals. Ownership stability and an obsessive culture around detail — lighting warmth, art commissions, staff presentation — explain a consistency that budget rivals with franchise sprawl cannot enforce.
The nomination recognises the brand that taught the budget segment ambition — proof that the price-conscious traveller was never actually taste-free. It merely lacked an offer. A generation of imitators is the compliment; the original's consistency is the answer.
Travelling for Business has charted the design-budget wave across Europe's capitals, and it still breaks first wherever Motel One builds.
Winners will be announced at the 2026 Travelling for Business Awards, and the One Lounge will mix something appropriate whatever the verdict.
