About this entry

Why Amsterdam Schiphol (Royal Schiphol Group) was shortlisted.

Amsterdam Schiphol is a Finalist for the Sustainability Award at the 2026 Travelling for Business Awards, and the Royal Schiphol Group's flagship competes as aviation's ground-game pioneer: the great hub that treats everything within its fence as decarbonisable now. The emblem is its work with airline partners to deploy automated taxiing technology, towing aircraft between runway and stand to cut ground emissions — attacking the fuel jets burn before they fly, a frontier most airports have not yet mapped.

The broader programme is systemic. Schiphol has pushed its own operations towards net-zero with electrified ground fleets, renewable power and terminal-efficiency investment; ground support equipment is converting to electric at scale; and the group's roadmap targets emission-free airport operations on a published timetable, with progress reported in the Dutch tradition of uncomfortable transparency. On the air side, the hub enables what airports can: SAF infrastructure and incentives, differentiated charges that reward cleaner, quieter aircraft, and collaborative trials — like the taxiing programme — that require an airport willing to redesign its own choreography. Innovation at an operating hub is surgery on a beating heart; Schiphol keeps volunteering for the theatre. Travelling for Business rates that appetite for live trials above any glossy roadmap.

The context adds credibility. Operating under some of Europe's most demanding environmental and community constraints, Schiphol has had to make sustainability operational rather than aspirational — noise, emissions and capacity are negotiated realities at the heart of Dutch public life, and the airport's answer has been engineering, not lobbying alone. For UK business travellers, Schiphol remains a primary hub — one of Europe's busiest short hops and a transfer point for the world — so its ground-game gains ride under British itineraries daily. The group exports the method too, applying its sustainability playbook across its airports and sharing trial results with the industry — a hub behaving like a standards body, which is what the transition actually requires of the great connectors of aviation.

The nomination recognises an airport doing the unglamorous work of decarbonising the parts of aviation an airport actually controls — and publishing the numbers as it goes. Winners will be announced at the 2026 Travelling for Business Awards, and Schiphol would naturally tow the trophy home emission-free.
