About this entry

Why United Airlines was shortlisted.

United Airlines is a Finalist for Best Long-Haul Airline at the 2026 Travelling for Business Awards, bringing to the category the largest transatlantic operation of any US carrier and a longer London pedigree than many realise: 2026 marks 35 years of United at Heathrow and more than a decade in its Terminal 2 home.

For UK corporates with American business, United's case is connectivity. Heathrow departures feed the airline's hubs — Newark, Washington Dulles, Chicago, Houston, Denver, San Francisco and Los Angeles — and from them a domestic network of a scale no non-US carrier can offer, putting hundreds of onward cities within a single stop of London. Seasonal services from Edinburgh and other British and Irish airports broaden the front door, and Star Alliance membership extends the web worldwide.

The product is on an upward path. United's newest Boeing 787-9s, fitted with its refreshed interiors — including the Polaris Studio suites at the front of the business cabin — have entered service to London, with San Francisco among the first routes to receive them. Polaris itself, the airline's all-aisle-access business class, is paired at hub airports with dedicated Polaris lounges, and chef-curated menus introduced in 2026 have sharpened the dining. Meanwhile the carrier is fitting Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet, part of a broader technology push that has made United's app and day-of-travel tools some of the most capable in the industry — no small thing when a connection tightens in Chicago.

Ambition extends beyond the Atlantic: the airline has announced ten new international cities for 2027, continuing an expansion that has made it one of the world's most globally minded US carriers. MileagePlus remains one of the most flexible loyalty schemes for UK-based flyers with American itineraries, and Star Alliance lounge access smooths the hub experience for those connecting deep into the network. For travel managers, that growth, allied to operational heft and constant product investment, makes United an increasingly confident booking on long-haul itineraries in both directions.

Its 2026 Finalist status reflects an airline converting scale into a steadily better passenger experience. The winners will be announced at the 2026 Travelling for Business Awards, and United's transatlantic strength ensures it will be in the conversation.
