About this entry

Why Air India was shortlisted.

Air India is a Finalist for Best Business Class Experience at the 2026 Travelling for Business Awards, and no nomination in the category tells a bigger turnaround story. Under Tata Group ownership, the Indian flag carrier has set about rebuilding its premium product from the tray table up — and the results are now visible where it matters most, in the cabin.

The flagship is the Airbus A350, and its business class announces the new Air India emphatically: privacy-forward suites in a 1-2-1 layout, fully flat beds, large high-definition screens, deep personal storage and an interior palette drawn from Indian design tradition rather than generic corporate grey. The aircraft carries the airline's most important international services, including the London Heathrow route from Delhi, giving UK business travellers the clearest possible before-and-after comparison with the cabins it replaced. Early passenger verdicts have been strikingly warm — a sentence that would rarely have been written about the airline even a decade ago.

The renewal runs deeper than one aircraft type. Air India has begun refitting its legacy fleet, starting with A320neo cabin upgrades that bring consistent seats and interiors to domestic and short-haul international routes, while the long-haul widebody retrofit programme works through the Boeing 777s and 787s behind it. Service investment is following the hardware, from crew retraining to upgraded dining on more international routes each season.

The transformation is underwritten by an order book running to hundreds of new aircraft, among the largest commitments in aviation history.

Partnerships are pulling the network into the premium mainstream. The carrier has expanded its strategic partnership with the Lufthansa Group, deepening codeshare and loyalty cooperation, and Star Alliance membership gives its business passengers lounge access and recognition across the world's largest alliance. At home, the merger with Vistara has folded India's most polished service culture into the flag carrier, bringing its crews and standards with it.

A place among the 2026 Finalists rewards trajectory as much as current form: this is the category's fastest-improving product, backed by one of aviation's largest aircraft orders. Winners will be announced at the 2026 Travelling for Business Awards, and Air India's presence in the field says the transformation is being noticed.
