About this entry

Why Montenegro was shortlisted.

Montenegro was named Winner of MICE Destination of the Year - Europe at the 2025 Travelling for Business Awards, crowning the Adriatic nation's remarkable transformation into the continent's most compelling new stage for meetings, incentives, conferences and events.

The raw material was always extraordinary: a coastline where the UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor folds fjord-like between mountains, medieval walled towns, and a hinterland of black-pine wilderness - all compressed into a country crossable in an afternoon. What has changed is the infrastructure rising to meet it. Porto Montenegro has matured into one of the Mediterranean's glossiest superyacht villages, its quaysides and hotels purpose-built for product launches and incentive glamour; Luštica Bay and the resorts around Tivat add contemporary venues and berths; and a wave of world-class hotel openings - this title's reviewers recently praised SIRO Boka Place as a wellness-led standard-bearer, while global groups from Banyan Tree on Mamula Island to IHG's incoming Crowne Plaza Budva plant their flags - gives planners genuine choice at every scale.

The practicalities increasingly favour the bold. Tivat and Podgorica airports connect to Europe's hubs in around two to three hours; costs undercut the western Mediterranean's established circuit; and the compact geography lets a single programme span sailing in the bay, dinner in a Venetian old town and a summit in a five-star ballroom without a transfer exceeding an hour. Travelling for Business flagged Montenegro among the emerging MICE destinations to watch - and this award confirms the arrival, a momentum captured in our coverage of the country's own Luxury Travel Summit.

Voters rewarded exactly that trajectory: a destination offering what mature markets cannot - novelty with substance, spectacle with value, and the delegate-thrilling sense of discovering somewhere first.

The luxury signals keep multiplying - One&Only chose Portonovi for its first European resort, an endorsement planners understood immediately - while the wild interior offers incentives no ballroom can: rafting the Tara canyon, Durmitor's national park, wine dinners in family konobas. Shoulder seasons stretch generously either side of summer, giving programmes Adriatic light at off-peak value.

As the Travelling for Business Awards look towards 2026, Montenegro stands as Europe's MICE destination of the moment: small enough to feel exclusive, spectacular enough to be unforgettable, and rising too fast for planners to ignore.
