About this entry

Why Mandarin Oriental was shortlisted.

Some brands expand until they are everywhere; Mandarin Oriental expands only where it can be the best thing in town. That discipline earned the luxury group a Finalist place for Hotel Brand of the Year at the 2024 Travelling for Business Awards.

The company descends from two of Asia's most storied addresses, the Mandarin in Hong Kong, opened in 1963, and Bangkok's venerable Oriental, and their union produced a house style now recognised worldwide: oriental grace, contemporary polish and service of almost telepathic attentiveness, signalled everywhere by the eleven-fold fan. The collection remains deliberately curated rather than sprawling, occupying prime positions in the cities where global business is actually transacted, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Geneva, New York among them, alongside a select set of resort escapes.

For senior travellers, the brand functions as a guarantee. Rooms and suites engineered for rest and work in equal measure; dining that treats Michelin stars as a house habit; spas so consistently exceptional they effectively defined modern hotel wellness; and meeting and entertaining spaces built for occasions where the setting negotiates alongside you. Celebrity devotees front its campaigns, but the brand's truest advocates are the executives who book it sight unseen in any city, because the fan has never once let them down.

Judges in 2024 noted a group extending carefully, new hotels and residences advancing across three continents, while guarding standards with a jeweller's eye, the rarest trick in luxury's current expansion race. The category went to IHG Hotels & Resorts, whose breadth suits corporate travel's full spectrum, with Marriott and Radisson Blu completing the shortlist; Mandarin Oriental's presence defined its ceiling.

The group's residences and fan-flagged dining rooms extend the brand far beyond its lobbies. Michelin-starred restaurants under Mandarin Oriental roofs rank among their cities' hardest reservations, hotel bars double as financial-district institutions, and the branded residences business houses a clientele for whom the hotel's service culture is a permanent address. The fan, in short, marks an ecosystem, and business travellers borrow its prestige by the night.

The Travelling for Business Awards honour excellence in every register, and Mandarin Oriental's 2024 recognition confirmed the quiet rule of the luxury market: when only the best address will do, the conversation starts with a fan.
