Some hotels chase status;
The Pig at Harlyn Bay simply lights the fire, opens the greenhouse and lets Cornwall do the talking. The approach earned the young coastal house a Finalist place for Best UK Hotel of the Year at the
2024 Travelling for Business Awards, sharing a shortlist with two of the grandest names in the land.
Opened in 2020 in one of Cornwall's most historic houses, its origins reaching back to the 15th century, the hotel sits moments above Harlyn's broad sandy beach on the county's north coast, ten minutes from Padstow's celebrated food scene. Inside, the Pig collection's signature aesthetic reigns: slate floors, mismatched antiques, deep sofas by log fires and bedrooms scattered from the main house to garden outbuildings, several gazing straight out to the Atlantic.
Food is the house religion. The restored kitchen garden, walled in ancient Cornish slate, feeds the restaurant daily, and everything the gardeners cannot grow arrives from within the group's famous 25-mile sourcing radius, day-boat fish, local meat and dairy, foraged coastal greens, served in a rustic dining room and greenhouse where formality has been firmly banned. Potting Shed treatment rooms, sea swims and cliff-path walks complete a recipe for decompression that has made the hotel a quiet favourite for creative away-days and leadership resets as much as for weekends.
Judges in 2024 recognised something increasingly rare: a luxury hotel with a completely settled identity, warm, unstuffy, rooted in its patch of coast, delivered with a consistency that belied its youth. The category went to Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in its anniversary year, with Cliveden House also shortlisted, exalted company for a house barely four years old.
The group's growth story frames the achievement. From a single Hampshire house, The Pig collection has expanded across southern England by cloning a philosophy rather than a template, each property shaped by its building and its patch of coast or country, Harlyn Bay's Cornish slate and Atlantic light making it unmistakably itself. That the newest houses feel as settled as the originals is the operational feat judges recognised.
The
Travelling for Business Awards seek out hospitality with a distinct point of view, and The Pig at Harlyn Bay's 2024 recognition confirmed that Britain's most charming hotel group had found, on the Cornish cliffs, one of its very best expressions.
