Most hotels ask how little they can take from a landscape;
Svart asks what it can give back. That inversion, a hotel engineered to produce more energy than it consumes, earned the Arctic Norwegian project a Finalist place for Best Sustainable Hotel of the Year (Europe) at the
2024 Travelling for Business Awards.
Conceived by Snohetta, the Norwegian practice behind the Oslo Opera House and a roll-call of landmark civic architecture, Svart is designed as a slender ring of glass and timber standing on stilts above Holandsfjorden, at the foot of the Svartisen glacier just north of the Arctic Circle, its name honouring the deep blue-black of the ancient ice. The circular geometry is functional poetry: orientated to harvest the midnight-summer sun while shading interiors against overheating, resting on poles that leave the shoreline essentially untouched, with construction and operations planned around renewable generation, reduced-energy building methods and minimal waste. The stated goal, energy positivity across the building's lifetime, would be a world first at this level of hospitality, with the Six Senses brand attached to operate the finished hotel.
Guests, when the doors open, are promised immersion in one of Europe's last true wildernesses: glacier hikes, fjord waters at the doorstep, northern lights overhead, luxury as a lens on the landscape rather than a barrier to it.
The 2024 judges shortlisted a hotel still taking shape because its influence already exceeds many operating properties; Svart's published engineering has become a reference point in hospitality's net-zero debate, studied far beyond Norway. In a category won by Hotel Valsana, alongside Borgo Pignano, Cas Gasi and The Pig at Combe, the project stood for the industry's furthest horizon.
The project's patience is itself instructive. Rather than racing to open, Svart's developers have used the long gestation to refine energy modelling, construction logistics for a roadless site, and operational plans that must function sustainably through polar night and midnight sun alike, documenting decisions in public as they go. The hotel intends to arrive with its promises pre-audited, a discipline the industry's greener claims would do well to study.
