No conversation about European short-haul flying gets far without
Ryanair, and at the
2024 Travelling for Business Awards the continent's largest airline by passengers was named a Finalist for Best Short Haul Airline of the Year, formal recognition of a carrier the business market once dismissed and now depends on.
Ryanair's proposition is scale weaponised. Thousands of daily flights connect hundreds of airports across Europe, and over the past decade the network has tilted decisively toward the primary airports professionals need, Rome Fiumicino, Paris, Brussels and beyond, while corridors such as London to Dublin carry business traffic in volumes that rank among the busiest in world aviation. For SMEs watching every line of the travel budget, Ryanair's fares have converted trips that were once video calls back into handshakes.
Efficiency is the engine underneath. An enormous single-family Boeing 737 fleet, increasingly featuring the higher-capacity, lower-burn "Gamechanger" variant, keeps costs and per-passenger emissions down, and the
operational machine built around it delivers punctuality that routinely embarrasses pricier rivals. Optional layers, reserved seating, priority boarding, flexible bundles, let a traveller assemble a business-grade experience a la carte, and the airline's digital platform makes booking, changing and boarding friction-light.
What judges recognised in 2024 was the maturing of the model. Ryanair has courted the business segment openly, sharpening schedules on commuter routes and packaging perks for frequent flyers, without ever surrendering the cost discipline that makes the fares possible. Love it or merely use it, the airline sets the floor price of European mobility, and everyone else must answer it.
Jet2.com took the 2024 title, with British Airways and easyJet also shortlisted, but Ryanair's finalist berth confirmed what the passenger numbers already shout: this is short-haul's defining force.
The airline's scale also produces an unglamorous gift: resilience. With Europe's largest short-haul operation, Ryanair can re-accommodate disrupted passengers at a pace smaller networks cannot, and its schedule depth on trunk routes means the difference between a lost meeting and a lost hour. Corporate bookers who once treated the carrier as a last resort now build itineraries around it, a conversion measured in the growing share of fares bought with flexibility bundles attached.
The
Travelling for Business Awards exist to recognise impact as well as polish, and few carriers have reshaped business travel's possibilities as thoroughly as Ryanair, with its ambitions, as ever, still climbing.
