About this entry

Why Virgin Atlantic was shortlisted.

Few airlines could turn forty and still be called the challenger, but Virgin Atlantic has never obeyed aviation's usual arithmetic. In 2024, the year the airline celebrated four decades since its maiden flight in June 1984, it was named a Finalist for Best Long Haul Airline of the Year at the 2024 Travelling for Business Awards.

The anniversary found the carrier in vintage form. From Heathrow and its long-standing Manchester base, Virgin Atlantic flies a deliberately concentrated long-haul network, the United States above all, where its joint venture with Delta Air Lines gives corporate customers coordinated schedules and onward connections across North America, plus key routes to the Caribbean, India and beyond. SkyTeam membership, joined in 2023, bolted alliance-wide lounge access and status recognition onto the airline's Flying Club programme, materially strengthening the loyalty case for frequent transatlantic flyers.

The fleet tells the modernisation story. Years of disciplined renewal have produced one of the youngest, cleanest long-haul fleets in the sky, centred on the Airbus A350-1000 and A330neo, quieter, more efficient aircraft carrying consistent cabins from Upper Class through premium economy, a category Virgin helped invent, to a well-regarded economy. On the ground, the Heathrow Clubhouse remains a destination in its own right, the rare lounge passengers arrive early for on purpose.

Judges in 2024 recognised a business that had emerged from turbulent industry years with its identity intact and its economics repaired: the wit and warmth still evident in every cabin, now riding on genuinely first-rate hardware.

Emirates claimed the title in a shortlist completed by British Airways and Singapore Airlines, but Virgin Atlantic's finalist place, in its ruby anniversary year and alongside recognition elsewhere in the 2024 Awards, felt like a fitting salute to forty years of making long-haul interesting.

The airline also spent its anniversary year deepening the customer relationship beyond the cabin. Flying Club promotions, partnerships and the widened redemption map that came with alliance membership gave the programme genuine teeth against its dominant rival, while the airline's app and digital servicing, long a strength, kept the administrative side of transatlantic travel refreshingly light. Forty years in, the brand's knack for making customers feel like co-conspirators rather than cargo endures.

The Travelling for Business Awards will watch the fifth decade with interest; on this evidence, so should the airline's competitors.
