Two decades after the aircraft it honours last landed, the
Concorde Room still flies a certain idea of Britain. At the
2024 Travelling for Business Awards, British Airways' most exclusive lounge, hidden within Heathrow Terminal 5, was crowned Winner of Best Airport Lounge UK.
The room takes its name, and its temperament, from the supersonic flagship retired in 2003, whose passengers expected the extraordinary as a matter of routine. Entry remains among the tightest in world aviation: British Airways First customers and holders of the coveted Concorde Room card only, an exclusivity that shapes an atmosphere closer to a St James's club than an airport facility, all polished wood, chandelier light, a storied centrepiece bar and artefacts of the Concorde era, the Gordon's Tree Bell among them, curated with affection rather than reverence.
Hospitality is the substance behind the scarcity. Dining is waiter-served and a la carte at proper tables, an occasion rather than a graze, supported by a serious wine list and a full bar; private cabanas offer complete seclusion for rest or a confidential call; dedicated staff quietly manage boarding and flight details; and the terrace supplies Heathrow's most civilised vantage for a final glass as the widebodies push back. senior travellers opening a long-haul journey, it is that rarest airport thing: a room that gives time back.
The 2024 judges confirmed the Concorde Room as the category's standout, the lounge against which the country's premium spaces are inevitably measured, and its win joined a broad British Airways presence across the year's shortlists.
Concorde's memory is curated here with a lightness the marketing age rarely manages. Artefacts sit beside armchairs rather than behind glass, staff tell the stories unprompted, and the room's rituals, the unhurried table service, the terrace glass at pushback, keep faith with an era when flying was an event. Regulars describe visits as appointments with a better version of air travel, one British Airways clearly intends to keep on the schedule.
