About this entry

Why Virgin Atlantic was shortlisted.

Virgin Atlantic was named Winner of DEI Airline of the Year at the 2025 Travelling for Business Awards, recognition for the airline that has done more than perhaps any other to make aviation a place where everyone can be themselves.

Virgin Atlantic's leadership in this space is substantive and sustained. The airline made headlines - and history - with its updated gender identity policy, allowing crew to choose the uniform in which they feel most comfortable regardless of gender, alongside optional pronoun badges and inclusive amendments to its ticketing systems. Relaxed rules on visible tattoos brought crew policy in line with modern life, while the famous Vivienne Westwood-designed uniforms are now offered without gendered restriction - style and self-expression treated as complementary, not competing. What could have been gestures became a genuine cultural shift, embedding the message that individuality is celebrated at 35,000 feet.

That commitment extends to the travellers it carries. The airline's Free to be Me campaign, launched alongside research showing that many LGBTQ+ travellers face real barriers to being themselves abroad, paired honest data with practical intent - equipping crew as allies and acknowledging the anxieties that can accompany international travel for minority groups. For an industry that moves people across borders and cultures for a living, it was a rare example of an airline engaging with passengers' lived experience rather than simply their logistics.

Voters rewarded authenticity. Virgin Atlantic's DEI work is not an annex to its brand; it is the brand - the same irreverent, human instinct that founded the airline four decades ago, now applied to identity and belonging, with employee networks and visible leadership accountability giving the public campaigns their internal foundations.

The 2025 category saw Virgin Atlantic take the title ahead of Finalists easyJet and Delta - three carriers advancing inclusion on both sides of the Atlantic.

The commitment reaches accessibility too, with investment in assistance services and staff training that treats non-visible needs as seriously as visible ones - because being yourself in the air includes travelling with confidence whatever your circumstances. Each initiative has been watched, and often followed, across the industry.

As the Travelling for Business Awards look towards 2026, Virgin Atlantic's win sets a marker for the whole industry: the airlines that will lead travel's next era are those where every passenger, and every colleague, can fly as exactly who they are.
