Every genre has its founding text, and sustainable luxury's was written on a jungle island in the Maldives.
Soneva Fushi, the resort that coined barefoot luxury in 1995, was named a Finalist for Best Sustainable Hotel of the Year (Rest of World) at the
2024 Travelling for Business Awards, nearly thirty years into an experiment the whole industry ended up joining.
The resort occupies Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, one of the archipelago's largest and greenest islands, where villas of sustainable timber and natural fabrics vanish into forest or stand over the reef, bicycles outnumber shoes, and the house rule, no news, no shoes, still governs the mood. An open-air cinema whispers through headsets to spare the marine life; the Maldives' first resort observatory opens the night sky; and the famous chocolate and ice cream rooms attend to less celestial appetites.
The environmental machinery beneath the romance set standards the sector still chases: single-use plastics banned as early as 2008, roughly ninety per cent of waste recycled through the pioneering Eco Centro, where a glass studio blows discarded bottles into villa glassware and art, extensive solar generation, and a long-running environmental levy on every stay funding carbon and conservation work, responsibility hard-wired into the invoice rather than appended to the brochure. unmistakably world-class.
The 2024 judges placed the elder statesman in a shortlist won by Fogo Island Inn, alongside Bawah Reserve and Tierra Patagonia, properties that, in different ways, are all descendants of the argument Soneva Fushi started.
Learning is quietly part of the luxury. Resident marine biologists walk guests through reef restoration, the observatory's astronomers narrate southern skies, and visits to Eco Centro turn waste management, improbably, into one of the island's most requested tours. Soneva has understood for decades that its guests' curiosity is an asset: travellers who understand a place become its advocates, and advocacy is the resort's true marketing department.
The
Travelling for Business Awards honour originators as well as innovators, and Soneva Fushi's 2024 recognition saluted the resort that proved paradise could be run on principle, and has spent three decades refusing to rest on the discovery.
