About this entry

Why Cas Gasi, Ibiza was shortlisted.

Ibiza's loudest exports are its clubs; its finest may be a farmhouse. Cas Gasi, the boutique agroturismo hidden in the island's rural heart, was named a Finalist for Best Sustainable Hotel of the Year (Europe) at the 2024 Travelling for Business Awards, recognition for a philosophy of quiet, organic luxury pursued for more than twenty years.

The property began life as a working finca in 1880, and founder Margaret von Korff's transformation of it, opened as a hotel in 2003, kept the soul intact. Down a dirt track near Santa Gertrudis, at the island's still centre, just eighteen individual rooms and suites sit among four hectares of pine forest, olive groves, almonds and terraced orchards, each space layered with antiques, art and the collected texture of a much-loved home rather than the gloss of a designed one.

Sustainability here predates the industry's vocabulary for it. Organic vegetable plots and fruit trees supply the kitchen; the estate presses its own extra-virgin olive oil; and the garden-to-table restaurant serves whatever the land offers that morning, fresher-than-fresh as the house motto has it. Open year-round, unusually for the island, the hotel pairs its produce with wellness of genuine depth: open-air yoga, tailored retreats and treatments drawing on Ibiza's calmer registers, making it a natural setting for small executive gatherings and creative resets far from the season's noise.

Judges in 2024 placed Cas Gasi in a European shortlist of rare quality, Hotel Valsana took the title, alongside Borgo Pignano, Svart and The Pig at Combe, and its presence there confirmed that intimacy and integrity remain a match for scale.

The welcome extends across seasons in a way island hospitality rarely attempts. While much of Ibiza shutters from autumn to spring, Cas Gasi remains open year-round, catching the island at its most authentic, almond blossom in February, empty beaches in November, and offering companies a winter retreat venue with Mediterranean light at off-season logistics. Regular guests speak of the place less as a hotel than as a standing invitation.

The Travelling for Business Awards prize hospitality with roots, and Cas Gasi's 2024 recognition honoured a pioneer whose gardens were feeding its guests long before sustainability had a marketing department, and whose example still shames louder claims.
