About this entry

Why Borgo Pignano, Tuscany was shortlisted.

In the hills between Volterra and San Gimignano, sustainability is not a recent conversion but the continuation of eight centuries of husbandry. That inheritance carried Borgo Pignano to a Finalist place for Best Sustainable Hotel of the Year (Europe) at the 2024 Travelling for Business Awards.

The estate's recorded history begins in 1139, and its stones remember monastic hospitals and medieval feuds; today the hamlet's 18th-century villa, with 12th-century ramparts and original frescoes, anchors a 750-acre patchwork of fields, woods and gardens restored with scholarly patience by its British owner. Rooms and suites in the villa, villas with private pools and maisonettes in former farm buildings offer honey-stoned seclusion, while the heated infinity pool, carved from the shell of an ancient limestone quarry, has become one of Tuscany's most photographed swims.

The working estate is the sustainability case. Organic and regenerative agriculture runs across the property, rebuilding soil and biodiversity while provisioning the kitchens on a zero-kilometre philosophy: estate vegetables, olive oil, honey, grains and wine flow to the refined Villa Pignano restaurant and the summer trattoria, matched with organic and biodynamic Tuscan bottles. Eco-conscious heating and resource systems operate quietly beneath the medieval fabric, and guests are drawn into the land's rhythms through truffle hunts, farm tours, riding and cooking classes.

For companies, the combination of exclusive-use capacity, deep tranquillity and reachable geography, Florence, Siena and Pisa all within striking distance, has made the Borgo a discreet stage for leadership retreats with authentic environmental substance.

Judges in 2024 set the estate among Europe's best, in a shortlist won by Hotel Valsana and completed by Cas Gasi, Svart and The Pig at Combe, exalted company that confirmed Tuscany's quietest luxury address as one of its most principled.

Art gives the estate its second harvest. The owner's founding vision paired conservation with creativity, and residencies, exhibitions and workshops thread through the calendar, while a portion of the estate's proceeds supports charitable and educational work in the surrounding community. Guests absorb it osmotically, between the quarry-pool swim and the evening passeggiata through the gardens, culture and agriculture literally sharing ground.

The Travelling for Business Awards celebrate hospitality that regenerates what it inherits, and Borgo Pignano's 2024 recognition honoured stewardship measured not in seasons but in centuries.
