Glen Moray has been distilling single malt Scotch whisky in Elgin, the historic capital of Moray, since 1897, and joins the Travelling for Business Awards as an event partner.
Set on the banks of the River Lossie at the western gateway to Speyside, the distillery styles itself “the gateway to flavour”, an approachable introduction to the region that produces more malt whisky than any other in Scotland.
The site began life as the West Brewery before conversion to a distillery, and spent much of the twentieth century under Macdonald and Muir, the firm behind Glenmorangie. Since 2008 it has been owned by French spirits group La Martiniquaise, which has invested heavily in the site, and today Glen Moray ranks among Speyside’s larger producers while keeping the character of a working, welcoming distillery.
Glen Moray’s range spans the easy-drinking Explorer collection, led by its Classic matured in American oak, the aged Heritage line and the experimental Warehouse 1 series drawn from cask trials in its most famous warehouse. Of particular note for frequent flyers is the Signature Travel Retail collection, aged in the distillery’s best casks and bottled at higher strength especially for travellers passing through duty free. It is a fitting partner for a region whose whisky calendar draws visitors from across the world, not least the Spirit of Speyside festival, one of the largest whisky festivals anywhere with hundreds of events across the region.
The distillery welcomes visitors year round, and tours carry a distinction few rivals can claim: your guide may well be one of the distillery craftsmen themselves. Experiences range from introductory tours to warehouse tastings, with an on-site café for those building a longer Moray itinerary. For business travellers, Elgin sits between two Scottish gateways, with Aberdeen Airport and Inverness both within reach for a detour worth taking after meetings in the north east.
